BE YOURSELF AND THE WORLD WILL ADJUST
By Thankgod Odanwu
Everyday when I wake up in the morning, I say my prayers. Next I ask myself this question; Who am I?
Firstly my main aim is to be myself: I dress the way I want to dress, I cut my hair the way I want it to be, use my body spray, I mean looking good and smelling nice is a good business, and I walk out the door in hopes that my inner self will align with my external world. But most times, as much as I want to admit that I do some things for myself, I can’t help but wonder what others will think if I wear a certain piece of clothing or cut my hair a certain way. I don’t know why, but I can’t help but create these internal struggles that I can only see and feel. I don’t want to believe that these thoughts are my truths, but they sometimes take precedence, I mean one gets to feel he needs some sort of approval from those around them and their environment right?
You see, while I don’t compare myself to others usually, I can’t help but feel that I have to act, talk, or look a certain way to be allowed to be a part of someone else’s world instead of just trusting myself that I am enough to be loved for who I am. Uh oh....... The thing is, I’ve struggled most of my life with trying to be who I wanted and I’ve always tried to please others or not do anything to be judged harshly. And sadly, most of the time I would end up giving in. Largely I've been very unhappy whenever I got to this point because I've not been true to my self.
I want to remind you: You are God's own masterpiece. You are unique. Don't compromise yourself for; "To shine your brightest light is to be who you truly are."
We all in one way or the other might have looked at others and wished we could be like them. We wished we could have what they have. The truth is you can’t be someone else. You are you. There is no other person specially made like you and you have your own traits, abilities talents and experiences. You can use them to get what you want, but you shouldn’t sacrifice yourself to do so. You are important.
Somehow in life, you might have acted like someone you are not. Whether you did things to impress a love interest, your boss, or someone else, you have all not been yourself because you believed it would get you what you wanted.
See, when you are not yourself, you change. You change who you are and what you are about. You change your thoughts and beliefs and you become someone who tries to please others instead of pleasing yourself. You become someone else instead of being yourself.
Don't get me wrong, being yourself does not mean you are selfish and it doesn’t mean you don’t care about others. Being yourself means you like who you are. Being yourself means living life how you want to live it, regardless of other people’s opinions. And it means you respect yourself.
Don’t worry about what others think. You can’t control them or their thoughts. If you like who you are, then that is all that matters. Don’t allow others to change who you are. You are being judged regardless of what you do, so being yourself makes happiness easier to obtain.
Live life on your terms, not someone else’s. Being yourself is important because you will not be happy otherwise.
Finally of utmost importance, the Bible says a good tree will bear good fruit, and a rotten tree will bear rotten fruit (Luke 6:43-44). Likewise, the "fruit" of our lives comes from the "root" within us. If you're rooted in shame, guilt, inferiority, rejection, lack of love, etc., the fruit of your endeavors in life will suffer. However, once you have a revelation of God's unconditional love for you and begin to accept yourself and others, eventually these new roots will produce good fruit, and most of your endeavors in life will thrive. In all aspect of your life, be a God-pleaser, not a man-pleaser - Galatians 1:10 "For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ."
Empower and love yourself. Put yourself in order and the world will adjust.
